Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. This two-story Period Revival house was constructed in 1916 according to city assessor records. It is square in plan with an asphalt shingled, hipped roof and red brick veneered walls. The windows throught are 8-over-1, double hung windows. Rafter tails are exposed in the eaves. The principal elevation faces south onto Horicon Street and is symmetrical in plan with a central arched canopy supported on Tuscan columns and pilasters. The canopy shades the entrance, which is accessed via low red brick stoop finished with concrete and stairs of the same construction. Three sets of paired windows are set evenly in the upper level atop a concrete belt course and banks of three windows are set in segmental arches on either side of the central entrance. The house is in good condition and retains a high degree of integrity as the original windows, exterior cladding and exposed rafters have been retained. The house combines stylistic elements typically associated with Colonial Revival (the arched canopy) and Mediterrranean Revival (the decoratively cut rafter tails). No other houses of similar style are included in WHPD within Mayville. In addition, the initial field survey did not uncover a house of similar architectural interest and integrity. For these reasons, the house is potentially eligible for listing as a good example of a Period Revival house in the City of Mayville. Proposed adjacent project activities will reconstruct Horicon St (STH 28) in front of the property. City utility improvements and storm sewer construction will require additional trench excavation within the 66' right of way. The existing sidewalk and terrace will be reconstructed. As the project has the potential to impact the property's setting, a DOE is recommended. The property was not previously surveyed. A new inventory record was created for it. |
