Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. This one-story manufacturing facility and office building was constructed in four phases between 1927 and 1983 and features elements characteristic of both twentieth century commercial buildings and mid-century Contemporary commercial buildings. The western most portion of the building was constructed in 1927 and features rectangluar parapets at opposite ends of the roofline as well as low relief pilasters emphasizing each bay. The middle portion of the building was constructed circa 1940 featuring two gabled parapets with four large factory windows along the ground level. The eastern portion of the building was constructed circa 2960 in a Contemporary commercial style featuring a flat roof and regularly spaced windows that extend from floor to ceiling. A flat roofed canopy shades the main entrance. At the rear of the building a modern manufacturing addition was constructed around 1983 adjoining the north elevations of the 1927 and circa 1940 portions of the building. The manufacturing facility was previously owned by Maysteel Products, Inc. Following the closure of the iron mines in the Mayville Area, Maysteel was established in 1936 and grew to be a leading industry in the City of Mayville. At the time the payville plant was closed in 2002, Maysteel had additional operations in Menomonee Falls, Allenton, Columbus and Ireland. Accordingly, the Maysteel Products manufacturing facility may be eligible for listing for its contributions to the history of metal-fabrication in the City of Mayville as well as the State of Wisconsin between 1936 and 2002. The building is in good condition and retains a moderate degree of integrity. The west elevation of the building-constructed in 1927has been clad in metal sheeting possibly in conjunction with the circa 1983 addition to the rear of the property. Also, the original factory windows in the original building and the 1940 addition appear to be modern replacements with metal awnings. Based on these alterations, the building is not a good example of a twentieth centruy commercial building and is likely not eligible for listing under Criterion C. Proposed adjacent project activities will reconstruct Horicon St (STH 28) in front of the property. City utility improvements and storm sewer construction will require additioanl trench excavation within the 66' right of way. The existing sidewalk and terrace will be roconstructed. As the project has the potential to impact the property's setting, a DOE is recommended. |
