Additional Information: | This Mediterranean Revival style apartment complex was constructed c.1929. It consists of two buildings fronting on Douglas Avenue: 1229 Douglas Ave and 1233 Douglas Ave. The building at 1229 Douglas Avenue is rectangular in plan with brick walls and a ceramic-tiled flat roof with an angled shed-roofed projection along the fagade. Rafter ends project along this front roofline. The front elevation faces west and is symmetrical in plan with a central doorway flanked by banks of three 6-over-1 windows. The front entrance is accessed by a concrete stoop with metal handrails and is sheltered by a small ceramic-tiled gable that projects from the building fagade; a stylized sunburst pattern ornaments the gable end. Above this is a small arched 6-over-1 window that is flanked by banks of three 6-over-1 windows. All windows have concrete sills. The building is in good condition and retains a relatively high degree of integrity (the front door of the 1233 Douglas Avenue apartment building appears to be a relatively recent metal security door). As a Mediterranean Revival building, the apartment complex features a ceramic tiled roof with projecting rafter ends, arched window detail, and flat wall surface characteristic of the style. Although the presence of these features make the property an adequate representative of the style, less restrained examples of the style are located elsewhere in Racine (WHPD records 10 other Mediterranean Revival building in the City of Racine, 2 of which are NRHP-Iisted, including another apartment building at 826 Main St). This property has not been previously surveyed. New AHI records were created. |
