Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. This 2 1/2 story Tudor Revival building was constructed in 1911 as a private residence and converted in 1941 to a funeral home. The building is generally a gabled ell form (with a 1-story, stone veneered addition off of the south/front elevation), and an asphalt-shingled gable roof. The property also contains a small detached garage constructed at about the same time as the house (c.1911 ). It is rectangular in plan with stucco walls and an asphalt-shingled hipped roof. A boarded-over window opening is located in the center of the west elevation; an overhead garage door is located in the center of the east elevation. The building is notable for its association with the history of funeral home development in the City of Racine in the twentieth century. The building was constructed as a private home for Herman and Frederica Mueller in 1911 and was converted to a funeral home in 1941. The building is in good condition and retains a high degree of integrity {the addition to the south elevation and the building's conversion to a funeral home occurred within the historic period). The building displays the decorative half-timbering, brick and stucco wall material, decorative chimney, multi-gabled roofline, and banks of multipane windows characteristic of the Tudor Revival style. Sixty-six other Tudor Revival houses have been recorded in WHPD in Racine; the property at 1435 Douglas Avenue retains a lower degree of integrity than many of these due to the construction of an addition to the front elevation in 1968. However, no other Tudor Revival funeral parlors have been recorded in Racine and only one funeral parlor of any style has been recorded in the city. This property compares favorably in that it retains a higher degree of integrity. These buildings have not been previously surveyed. New AHI records were created. |
