Additional Information: | Stanley O. Bokelmann, general contractor. Berkowitz was a professor in the UW Psychology Department. "Madison area builder Stanley Bokelman constructed this house in 1958. Bokelman specialized in the construction of modular homes, whose designs closely relate tot he Ranch home styles popular in California during this period. Many of his houses can be recognized today by the use of a carport as both a point of entry ans as the place to store the family car. Stanley Bokelman built his first house in the neighborhood in 1957, an entry in that year's Parade of Homes. The home's current owners replaced the carport with a garage and added a dramatic front entry. While the home has had several additions and modifications of the years, numerous original elements remain. The sloped ceiling corresponding to the roof pitch, clerestory windows in the dining room, interior wood paneling, and the partially open kitchen are all parts of the original design. While the basement level has had some modification, the main level floorplan is close to the original. The one exception in the current library which was created from the third bedroom. The room is now entered from the living room and the hall door has been removed. Madison Magazine featured the home's remodeling project in July 2005. Leonard and Nettie Berkowitz were the home's first owners. Leonard Berkowitz was with the UW Psychology Department." Hill Farms Home Tour, Madison Trust for Historic Preservation, 2006. |
