Additional Information: | Donald C. Sampson, general contractor. Mrs. Kalal was the widow of E. John Kalal. This house was in the 1959 Parade of Homes (#13). "Builder Donald Sampson constructed this house an an entry in the 1959 Parade of Homes. The house is in nearly original condition, retaining its original kitchen, folding doors, home intercom, and bathrooms. The first owner, Gladys Kalal, resided here until 2002. The privacy of the occupants is maximized by turning the house sideways on its lot, so that the bedrooms are located at the back of the house. In fact, the street facade contains only one window. Unity between interior and exterior is maintained by using patterned sections of brick wall on both the outside and in the living and dining rooms. Additionally, large banks of casement windows on the sides of the house provide abundant light and a view of the neighborhood. While the house is relatively small, the design maximizes the feel of spaciousness by allocation ample space for an entry hall that opens to the sunken living room with a cathedral ceilings. Cathedral ceilings and ample built-in storage make the bedrooms feel spacious as well. For ease of housekeeping, the laundry facilities, concealed by a screen, are located in the main hallway. In 1960, Mrs. Kalal eclosed the original breezeway between the house and garage." Hill Farms Home Tour, Madison Trust for Historic Preservation, 2006. |
