Additional Information: | Three distinct cultural landscape typologies are found on Sand Island’s southern shore at the Shaw-Hill farm, Camp Stella, and the Campbell-Jensch property. The typologies are related to the each site’s historic land use. The Campbell-Jensch property represents a seasonal private cottage typology, with the cottage being a central element in a breezy yard. The Campbell-Jensch landscape features several objects. A clothesline is situated west of the barn (Heloise’s Hideout). A wood flag pole topped with a weather vane is located between the Campbell Cottage and the stairs leading to the dock. A second set of wood stairs is located east of the stairs leading to the dock; this second set of stairs does not have an associated dock. Finally, a wood-plank bridge with a wood-framed structure is located east of the pump house. Character-defining features of the Campbell-Jensch landscape include: • Large cottage sited in central location • Mown lawn with coniferous canopy • Bluff-top location maximizes lake breezes • Unencumbered views from lake side of cottage to Lake Superior • Utilitarian outbuildings aligned in rows along property edge • Lack of vehicular circulation system, but a connected pedestrian pathway system to adjacent properties • Minimal beach associated with site |
