Additional Information: | 2023: The threshing barn is a rectangular plan, gable roofed barn with a shed roof addition along the full-width of the east elevation. The barn was constructed circa 1900. A concrete silo was constructed between 1982 and 1999 and is attached to the west elevation. The foundation is constructed of cut stone. The exterior is clad in vertical wood plans. The west elevation features several evenly spaced window openings of which most have been boarded. The windows that remain are 4-over-4 wood sash windows. The south elevation features a sliding vehicular door accessed via the property driveway and a hay door and hay good in the gable end. The shed roof addition contains a full-width vehicular drive-through. A pole barn was constructed east of the threshing barn circa 1999. The Peter Hanson Farmstead, also known as the Willow Grove Stock and Grain Farm, was constructed along Knapp Valley Road in Section 17, Town of Clinton, Vernon County. Plat maps, atlases, and U.S. Census records indicate the 160-acre parcel was in the ownership of Peter Hanson and/or his descendants from at least 1878 to 1930. Initially, the residence was constructed east of Knapp Creek, but by 1896, it was constructed or reconstructed further northwest in the present location west of Knapp Creek. As it stands, the farmstead consists of a historic age log house (246176), gabled ell house (246177), threshing barn (229961), tobacco barn (246178), agricultural outbuilding (246179), and corn crib (246180) as well as a non-historic age machine shed. Of these, the threshing barn was surveyed in 2015 at which time it was evaluated as potentially eligible. Two smaller barns or outbuildings, formerly west of Knapp Valley Road, were demolished after 1957. 2015: This Three Bay Threshing Barn is gable roofed and built on a concrete foundation with a shed roof extension to the south. A short gable-roofed passageway connects the barn with the adjacent concrete stave silo. Although the roof is metal covered, the sheets do not appear to be 4 x 6 ft. in size and may represent the original roof. Doors are in the gable ends. Windows are a mix of one-over-one and four-over-four sash windows and appear original. The window openings are covered by clear plastic sheets. The east end is decorated with a five-pointed star made from Christmas lights over the main door. |
