Additional Information: | The Chai-A Motel consists of an A-frame office/owners' residence; two guest room buildings; and two pole buildings. The A-frame (AHI #230004) was constructed in 1967. The building is oriented with its front (triangular) side towards the roadway. The majority of the front elevation is glazed with a combination of fixed windows and sliding patio doors. The corners of the front elevation are clad in stone veneer; the north (left) corner cladding extends upwards through the roofline to form a prominent chimney. Two additions with shallowly-pitched roofs extend from the main block of the building. The southern (side) addition (presumably serving as the motel office) has stone veneer-clad half walls and large windows. The northeast (rear) addition is clad in stone veneer and is partially built into the slope of the hill. Based on aerial photographs, this addition presumably contains a garage. Both of the guest rooms buildings (AHI #230007 and 230008) are identical and were constructed in 1977. Each building contains five guest rooms and is one-story and end-gabled. The buildings have stone veneer half walls with vertical board and batten cladding above. Each guest room is marked by a metal entry door and a large central window flanked by smaller sidelights. The property also contains two metal pole buildings, only partially visible from the roadway. Both pole buildings appear to have been constructed since 1985. The property was not accessible during survey. A representative from the motel requested that no photos be taken of the property. Consultants from UWM-CRM photographed the A-frame and one of the guest room buildings from Old Highway Rd; the other guest room building and the pole buildings could not be photographed. |
