Additional Information: | July-August 2001-This two-story brick commercial building features a flat gable roof and an ornamented parapet rising above the roofline of the front gable end as well as a one-bay, frame, gable-roofed rear addition that fronts on Main Street. A cornice of brick dentils, corbels, and moldings that is topped by a shaped pediment ornaments the brick parapet. The building is further characterized by round arched windows ornamented by brick hood molds that are accented by white stone keystones on the upper level of the front elevation and segmental arched windows on the side elevations. Contemporary metal windows and boards, which are in the arch of the window openings, have replaced all of the windows. A large bay window is located on the second story of the rear addition. The storefront on the front elevation has been replaced with contemporary materials. This 1870s brick commercial building was identified as a printing office on Sanborn Insurance Maps from the earliest Sanborn Map of the city in 1887 until the last Sanborn Map published in 1931. Buffalo County Republikaner Newspaper was established in Buffalo City in 1861 and was moved to Fountain City to a building on the corner of Main and Liberty in 1864 by its publisher William Oppliger. The newspaper office was moved to 17 North Street around 1871. This newspaper, reportedly the most extensive German newspaper in the Northwest, and printing office building continued to house a printing business until the local newspaper closed in the 1960s. Presently, it serves as an apartment building. The windows of the is building, as well as the storefront area, have been altered considerably. |
