Additional Information: | Herman Guenther had mill built after previous two mills had been destroyed by fire. Resurveyed April 2016: subsequent changes include the addition of vinyl siding throughout, window and door replacement, the loss of several window openings, the insensitive addition of a large bank of windows that spans the width of the east façade, and the construction of a 2-story deck across the south façade. This property consists of an early-twentieth-century mill and an adjacent concrete dam that appears to be attached to the raised foundation of the mill at the building’s southwest corner. This 2-story vernacular mill building was constructed in 1908. It is rectangular in plan with a stone foundation, vinyl siding, and an asphalt-shingled side-gabled roof. The front elevation faces north and is asymmetrical in plan with a projecting front-gabled wing. This wing has a saltbox style roofline and contains two doorways and four new 8-over-8 windows. The area around the primary door has been clad in stone veneer while the door itself has a classically-inspired surround. West of this is a new, “box” bay window. A wide bank of eight casement windows spans the width of the building’s east elevation while a 2-story wooden deck spans the width of the south elevation. The attached dam was constructed c.1914 and spans the width of the South Branch of the Manitowoc River for a total length of approximately 120 feet. The visible length of the dam is of concrete construction with iron railings at the north and south abutments. A mill pond is located west of the dam. |
