Additional Information: | Short square tower with battlements flanking facade; pointed arched stained glass windows; pointed arched entrance with large stained glass window and articulated voussoirs; small west transept with rose window; small butresses on side elevations. Polychrome trim. Constructed in 1932 to replace the former church destroyed by fire in 1932, the brick, gable roofed Zion Lutheran Church is characterized by a square bell tower with battlements and a small west transept and is ornamented by contrasting white masonry articulated voussoirs tying the large pointed arched window and entrance together as one unit and white masonry belt courses and accents buttresses, pointed arched stained glass windows and tracery in the windows are Gothic style details used to further identify the church as a modern Gothic structure. Built by the Zion Lutherans, who were organized as a parish in 1864, the Zion Lutheran Church is architecturally significant as the best architectural representative of the early 20th century Gothic Revival styled church structures. Formally organized as a parish in 1868, the Zion Luthers built a small chapel on the site of the present church, probably in 1869. This chapel was replaced in 1885, by a frame church, later veneered in brick. It was destroyed by fire in 1932. The present Zion Luther Church was erected in its place the same year. The original members of the Zion Lutheran Parish were mostly German immigrants. Nevertheless, English services were part of the Church's ministry as early as the 1860's. |
