Additional Information: | 1982: DESCRIPTION: This massive two story clapboard square-plan residence has a central hip roof from which a two-story shingled gabled bay and a second shingled gable project. The rectangular windows are intact and arranged asymmetrically. An entry with a small veranda is placed at the NE corner, complete with a small balustrade. The house is one of the best preserved of its type in the Late Picturesque style complete with decorative shingles in the gables and finely made stained glass. SIGNIFICANCE: The house is significant for its pivotal role in the proposed Second Avenue West district as an outstanding example of a commonly found Late Picturesque style home that consists of a large two story shingles gable house with clapboard siding. As a pivotal property, this house represents a finely preserved example of the large and impressive residences built on some of the more prestigious avenues such as Chapple, MacArthur, or Ellis Avenues in the early 1890s. Few examples are in such good repair. The assessor's file indicated that the house was owned for nearly fifty years by the Williams family. 2017: House has been re-sheathed with vinyl. |
