Additional Information: | BRACKETS AND ORNAMENTAL TRUSSES IN GABLES, 3 STORY SQUARE TOWER W/HIP ROOF AND STICK STYLE ORNAMENT, ENCLOSED PORCH W/NARROW ROUND ARCHED MULTI-LIGHT WINDOWS. SEXTON WAS BORN IN CENTRAL, NEW YORK IN 1822. HE MARRIED ANNETTE FARNHAM, MOVED TO COLUMBUS IN 1855, AND BECAME INVOLVED IN THE GRAIN AND PRODUCE BUSINESS. HE WAS MAYOR OF COLUMBUS FOR TWO TERMS, ELECTED FIVE TERMS AS MASTER OF THE MASONIC LODGE, AND WAS THE LOCAL AUTHORITY ON THE CEREMONIES OF THE BLUE LODGE AND THE KNIGHTS TEMPLARS. The only example of the Stick Style in Columbus and an outstanding design, by prominent Milwaukee architect Edward Townsend Mix. Built for Andrew O. Sexton in 1877-78 by Columbus carpentry contractor Richard D. Vanaken, this wood house is one of the best houses of this period in Columbus and it is highly intact as well. |
