Additional Information: | SEGMENTAL ARCHED WINDOWS W/SHUTTERS, BRACKETS UNDER EAVES, IONIC COLUMNS ON PORCH. CHADBOURN FOLLOWED HIS BROTHER REUBEN TO COLUMBUS AND JOINED IN THE REAL ESTATE AND MONEY LENDING BUSINESS. WHEN SMITH DIED IN 1891, HIS FAMILY MOVED TO CALIFORNIA. Built in 1869 in the Italianate style for Smith W. Chadbourn, brother of Reuben W. Chadbourn, who lived across the street at 654 W. Prairie St., this is the most impressive of the early frame examples of this style in Columbus. At some later time the original front porch was replaced with the present elaborate Classical Revival style porch and some of the first story windows were altered as well, possibly at the same time. In addition, the simple Astylistic form carriage barn built for Chadbourn in 1888 is still extant as well although it is now part of the property associated with 347 S. Charles St. "Smith Chadbourn followed his brother Reuben to Columbus and joined in the real estate and money lending business. When Smith died in 1891, his family moved to California. This house has an unusually picturesque quality. The residence combines the Italianate Style with Neoclassical details that might have been the result of an extensive early 20th century remodeling. The building's L-shaped massing, it's flattened arch windows and the bay containing round-arched windows on the side are all typical of the Italianate Style. Its intricately detailed front porch is a fine example of Neoclassical design, with ornate Roman Ionic capitals, fluted column shafts, denticulated cornice, and uppoer porch balustrade. The grouping of the columns at the porch corners is echoed by the placement of the rectangular pedestals in the balustrade above. Note the balustrade added to the top of the bay window as well."
