Additional Information: | 2 SECTIONS SIDE BY SIDE, ONE W/HIP ROOF, ONE W/GABLED ROOF, WALLS OF CUT SANDSTONE. STONE WAS HAND QUARRIED AND TOOLED BY ST. JOHN NEAR WATERLOO AND BROUGHT HERE 2 OR 3 AT A TIME. ST. JOHN MADE HANDLES FOR ADZES, PICKS, AND AXES; HIS NICKNAME WAS "AXE HANDLE ST. JOHN". THE CUT STONE SLABS ARE 4" THICK AND STANDING ON EDGE. This very small cut stone Italianate style house was built ca.1865 for Christopher St. John and it is one of the most unusual examples of this style in Wisconsin. A bedroom occupies the second story of the taller of the two sections of the building and is the most original remaining portion of the original interior. The exterior, however, is still in a very original state. Earlier photos show that this house once had a standing seam metal roof, but it is not known if this is still true. |
