Several businesses in Portage operated hotels, or more appropriately rented rooms, in connection with their businesses. M. Huber arrived in Portage in 1854 and engaged in the bakery trade in that year at the site of 113 E. Cook. In 1879-1880, a building housing his hotel, eating house, and bakery was erected on this property. Huber operated the European Hotel on the second floor above his bakery between at least 1884 and 1903-1904. Beetween 1908 and at least 1912, he ran a bowling alley with or instead of the bakery. Byu 1917, the building appears to be vacant, but between 1929 and 1937, R. P. Peschl operated a bakery in the Huber Building. By 1948, it had become the Quality Bakery which occupied the building through 1955 (Butterfield 1880: 906; date stone; Sanborn-Perris Map Co. 1885; 1889; 1894; 1901; 1910; 1`918; 1929; Columbia Co. Treasurer 1863- [1878-1930]; R.L. Polk & Co. 1884-85; 1896-97; 1901-02; 1903-04; 1909-10; 1917-18).

"Michael Huber engaged in the bakery business at this site by 1856. The building housing his hotel, eating house, and bakery was erected here in 1879. Unlike the Emder House, his European Hotel, operating until about 1903-14, simply meant rented rooms on the second floor. Between about 1908 to at least 1912, Huber ran a bowling alley rather than a bakery. After 1917 until 1929, its use remains unclear. It again served as a bakery under different owners after 1929, and yet again in 1991. Note the decorative brick and iron work of the Italianate Commercial style along the parapet, building corners, and upper floor windows."
