Additional Information: | DESCRIPTION: This very large two story plus attic frame house was built ca. 1887, a few years before most of its neighbors. The Late Picturesque style house features large intersecting gables that are shingled and the front gable is deeply recessed. Beneath its wide cornice, a polygonal bay and a small square window mark the second story. Beneath the cornice are two large S-scroll brackets. The southeast facade projects from the main block of the house and is pierced by three rectangular windows. Wrapping around to the front facade from this side projection is a massive sunporch with its original multi-pane windows that then becomes an open veranda across most of the front facade. The different stories are distinguished by a continuous molding and the veranda retains its balustrade. SIGNIFICANCE: The house is significant as a finely designed and very well preserved Late Picturesque style house that is unsurpassed in the district. Numerous Queen Anne and Shingle style elements are included in the design, thus contributing to the district's stylistic unity. |

Bibliographic References: | The house was built in 1887 by Floyd B. Gray (house construction reported in the 3 December 1887 issue of the Ashland Press) and occupied by him until 1890 (per city directories), when he sold it to Fred Payne (44/34, #13624). The 2003 book published by the Ashland Historical Society, Ashland: Oh How You've Changed, incorrectly identifies it as built by Payne in 1890. |
