NOTES
Additional Information:BAY TURRET ON S SIDE. [Date Cnst:-1878]

2019: Constructed in 1868, this secular school was organized by a number of Prairie du Chien’s German residents to teach the German language. For the two years before the school building was constructed, lessons were taught at other premises, including the German Methodist Church. During its peak years of operation, the school’s enrollment reached 75 students. As a private organization, the school charged its members a tuition of one dollar and non-members $1.50. The German School proved to be relatively short-lived, however, as membership declined in the years after its formation. In 1878, the school organization was dissolved and the building was leased for other purposes. The modest brick building became the private residence of Major Edward Whaley in 1885 and remains a private residence today.
