Additional Information: | ARCHITECTURAL STATEMENT: Green County's only remaining grist mill is a two story, coursed stone structure located on the Pecatonica River. Fine stonework distinguishes the building. HISTORICAL STATEMENT: The Pecatonica River, an excellent source of water power, was first tapped as a resource in 1849 when Edward Hanchett began the construction of a dam at the point where the present settlement of Martintown (originally Martin) is located. Nathaniel Martin, a native of West Virginia, joined Hanchett in 1850 and worked to complete the dam and a saw mill in that year. In 1851 Martin became sole owner and in 1854 constructed the grist mill which remains on the site. Martin later (in 1868) platted the village which sprang up around the mills and which carries his name. Others associated with this building include Cadwalader Washburn and Cyrus Woodman in 1846. Woodman used the site for water power. [B]. It is architecturally significant in that it represents a type, period or method of construction. It is historically significant in that it is associated with the development of a locality. |
