2015: "The Morehead/Luchsinger Farmstead consists of a house, barn, and granary. The farmhouse (AHI# 4443) was constructed in 1857 by William P. Close of Gates County, New York. The house is clad in 4-inch horizontal clapboard with a cross gable roof clad in asphalt shingles. A historic-age, single-story porch, enclosed in the early 1900s, is located on the northeast (side) elevation. The original main recessed entrance with recessed wood panels, side lights, and transom is located on the front (southeast) elevation. The entrance is flanked by wood Doric box pilasters. The house has a simple cornice with traditional Greek Revival returns, and corner board pilasters with an egg-and-dart motif. The house has an exposed stone foundation with three-light windows in addition to the original six-over-six, double-hung sash on the main portion and one-over-one, double-hung floor to ceiling windows on the porch ell. Two historic-age additions were made to the rear (northwest) elevation. The c.1900 addition serves as a kitchen and bathroom, while the c.1920 addition served as a garage and storage area before being removed from the building. The remaining historic-age addition is one story, clad in 4-inch horizontal clapboard, with a gable roof clad in asphalt shingles and a six-over-six, double-hung window on the east elevation. Since 1988 a window on the side (southwest) elevation was converted into an entrance.
The c.1845 barn (AHI# 12579) is southwest of the house. It is clad in vertical wood planks, and has a saltbox roof clad in metal and a foundation and raised basement built of local stone, with several fixed six-light windows.
The c.1845 gable roof granary (AHI# 230057) is southwest of the house and has a raised stone foundation and vertical wood plank siding. Original window and door openings are present. The roof is clad in wood shingles.
The original owner, William Morehead, purchased the land in 1845 and built a log cabin. He then constructed the other farm outbuildings in what can be considered a typical layout for southern Dane County. The log cabin is nonextant, replaced by the frame house in 1857. The remaining buildings appear to exist in their original locations. Morehead was a prominent local resident, serving terms as Town Treasurer, Town Chairman, and Town Assessor, and the property passed to his son William B. Morehead upon his death. The farmstead remained in the Morehead family for over a century, and the 1954 county atlas lists W.W. Morehead as the owner."
