It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. ELLIPTICAL ARCHED WINDOW ON SIDE. ROUND ARCHED WINDOWS ON FRONT. Smithback School replaced an earlier, frame, gable front building, constructed before 1873 at the nearby corner of WIS 73 and Koshkonong Road. Smithback was named for Nils Olsen Smithback, from Norway, an early settler to the Town of Christiana and property owner of adjoining land. Smithback operated from 1922 until 1963, when it closed. It was then used by the Town of Christiana for town hall functions until the recent construction of their new hall, located across the street. Today Smithback is privately owned. |
