Additional Information: | Aluminum siding is the exterior fabric on this 1 1/2 and 2 story residence. The roof is gabled with a box cornice. The south side or front has three gable wall dormers on a gable roof (with the eave side facing the road). Each dormer has paired 4/4 windows. A shed roof porch is on this section. Paired first story windwos are to the east of this. At this point the facade comes out and forms an ell. The front door is on the west part of this ell. It has sidelights and is under a shed roof that is contiguous with house roof. East of this the gable roof changes and has the gable end facing the road. Paired 4/4 windows are on the first story and a single 4/4 window on the second. Shutters flank these windows. The east side has two gable wall dormers and a one story bay window. An attached garage is on the west side. Landscaping consists of a tall evergreen near the house and small evergreens around the foundation and elsewhere on the lot. There are a few trees in the front and more in the back yard. Like most houses on this side of West First Street, the yard extends back to the Willow River and is larger in back than front. The house has been altered to the point that it has lost some of its integrity. It is not architecturally significant. It does, however, add to the character of the district it is located in. A c.1930 photo shows this residence as an upright and wing or T-plan house. There is one gable wall dormer on the wing and a porch here. The upright has one window on the top story and a larger (or paired one below) that is all that is visible. The 1897 plat map shows A.W. Beal with a residence here. News accounts in 1888, when William Johnston was building (see SC29-34,m 447 West First Stret) said his residence was going up between Beal's and William's houses. That would put this residence here pre-1888. |
