Additional Information: | A 'site file' titled "Josephine and Henry M. Zander House" exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. RAISED MORTAR JOINTS ON FRONT. Henry M. Zander, the second son of Margaret and Peter Zander, whose name appears on the 1861 plat map for the Town of Cross Plains as owning this property, lived on that farm with his wife Josephine Kalscheur Zander before it was acquired by other Zander descendants. The Zander farm includes land in sections 12, 13, and 14. The house is located in section 14, while the barns are in another section. Henry then moved to the Paltz farm on which AHI #4793 was once located. Ill health prompted him to move into the Village of Cross Plains where he then built a house, a two-story brick store and in 1908 helped establish the State Bank of Cross Plains. Loretta Zander moved into the stone house on N. Birch Trail in 1947, a few days after her marriage to James Zander, the son of Jacob and Amelia Zander, who had lived in the house with their eight children for 37 years. The young couple purchased the farm and raised their ten children in the stone house. Loretta, now a widow, and her son Dan resided in the house next. During their occupancy, James and Loretta Zander made many improvements to the house. |
