NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Originally located at c. 215 E. Fountain St. but was moved to a different site on E. Fountain St. in 1998. Original location is on the city map 50/25. THIS ONE-STORY LOG RESIDENCE FEATURES AN L-SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, AN ASPHALT SHINGLED EXTERIOR AND A GABLE ROOF. ADDITIONS HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE C. 1827 BUILDING, WHICH NOW LAY IN RUINS. (SEE BIB. REF. A). HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: COLONEL HENRY DODGE (1782-1867), ONE OF THE LEADING POLITICAL FIGURES DURING WISCONSIN'S TERRITORIAL ERA, SETTLED IN DODGEVILLE IN 1827 AND, ACCORDING TO A LOCAL HISOTRIAN, CONSTRUCTED THIS SMALL LOG RESIDENCE. HIS SMELTING FURNACE, ALSO BUILT IN 1827, WAS REPORTED TO BE LOCATED JUST NORTHEAST OF THIS DWELLING, ACROSS THE RAVINE. A DESCRIPTION OF DODGE'S FIRST RESIDENCE AND FURNACE IS INCLUDED IN THE COUNTY HISTORY, THOUGH IT WAS ALSO STATED THAT NOTHING REMAINED OF THIS COMPLEX. (SEE BIB. REF. B). AT A LATER DATE (C. 1828) DODGE MOVED SOUTH OF DODGEVILLE WHERE HE BUILT A LARGE HOME. IN 1923 ONLY RUINS REMINED OF THE SITE. (SEE BIB. REF. C). (SEE NOTABLE PERSONS SECTION AND SOCIAL AND POLITICAL MOVEMENTS THEME OF THE FINAL REPORT FOR MORE INFORMATION ON DODGE). HISTORICAL STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: IF MORE CONCRETE EVIDENCE REGARDING HENRY DODGE'S ASSOCIATION WITH THIS STRUCTURE IS FORTHCOMING, IT SHOULD BE EVALUATED FOR NATIONAL REGISTER LISTING AT THE STATE LEVEL OF SIGNIFICANCE. (SEE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND ABOVE).
