Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. Aluminum siding covers this 1 1/2 story home. The detailing is colonial revival and plan is rectangular. Windows are 6/1. There is a box cornice and plain frieze on the multi-gabled roofline. A triple column with capitals is the front porch support. A leaded glass Queen Anne window is under the porch. There is a gable wall dormer. The cornice is boxed. The enclosing of part of the front porch has detracted from the integrity of this building. According to the current owner, Governor Warren Knowles lived in the house. A photo of him and Mrs. Knowles sitting in the living room was published by Mary Sather in a book called "On the Old West Side". Julia Glover (sister to John and Ezra Jr.) lived here after her husband Hiram Brown (of Brown and Bigelow) passed away in 1906. Julia's first husband, Charles Hamen, had been an entrepreneur who helped bring the telegraph to the New Richmond area. |
