Additional Information: | Puempel's Tavern also retains its cast iron cornice which is underlined by horizontal and vertical brick designs. Was a boarding house at one time. In addition to the tavern on the first floor, the rooms upstairs served as first homes to many early Swiss immigrants. 2006- "A commercial building in the Italianate style has served this village since 1890. The cast iron columns and brickwork give this building a distinct style. The tavern also has a series of large murals painted by Albert Struebin in 1913. Besides being a tavern it has served as a boarding house for newly arrived Swiss immigrants coming to settle in New Glarus." -"Historic Landmarks of New Glarus", Historical Preservation Commission of New Glarus, prepared by Amanda Crary, 2006. |
