The statue’s creator is unknown but the design has been traced to Italy, Germany, France or Belgium. It was installed in Stevens Point’s public square in 1895 as part of a civic improvement project. The statue was damaged in 1910 due to a wagon accident and it was removed from the square. A year later, a pair of city firefighters repaired the statue and placed it outside of the fire station. The statue was removed again in 1967 when the fire department relocated to the subject building. It was placed at its present location in 1975 and heavily damaged by vandals in 1988. The statue was essentially reconstructed by John Becker in 1989 after a local fundraising effort.
