Additional Information: | Clapboard is the exterior fabric on this 2 story home. The details are colonial revival. The plan is rectangular with a rock faced foundation. Asphalt shingles cover the hip roof. The roof has pedimented gables. The cornice is boxed and windows have wood frames with entablature heads. There is a plain frieze under the eaves and a wood water table line. A small flare, like a pent roof, is at the second floor level and a wood belt course is below this. On the north, or front side, is a pedimented gable (west part) with a square window, fishscales and two cross hatched diamond shaped pieces of woodwork. The second story windows with vertical panes are on this side. A one story full front porch is enclosed. The colunns are round and fluted with ionic capitals. The entry is at the west part. The west side has a Queen Anne style window situated at a level between stories. South of this is a two story ell below a pedimented gable with fishscales. At the south part of the west side is one window on each story. A one story addition has been put on the rear or south part of the residence. On the east side is a two story bay window. The second story is a box bay, the first a regular bay. Sawn woodwork is above the first story windows here. The pedimented gable over the bay is like the other two. Three windows are on the bottom of the bay and one at the top. One window on each story is north of this. South of the bay is a one story porch with railing and fluted porch columns. The house is situated on a corner lot. The property forms a small hill and the house sits higher than the road (especially on South Knowles avenue). A few large evergreens are in the front yard. The back yard is fenced in. The house is quite visible when approaching from the north or east. It is in excellent condition. There have been some minimal window changes (aluminum inserts). The enclosing of the front porch has detracted from the original integrity of this residence. Otherwise it is an excellent example of this style. It has no architectural significance because of these alterations. There are also examples of this style that have more integrity in the city. |
