Additional Information: | PROJECTING ENTRY TOWER. EXPOSED RAFTER ENDS. This building served as the Meier School from 1920-1955. October 2020: This One Story Cube school house was constructed in 1920. It is rectangular in plan with a concrete foundation, brick walls, and an asphalt-shingled hipped roof with no eave overhang (the roof is a modern replacement for the original roof that featured wide overhanging eaves supported by decoratively shaped rafter ends). A narrow cornice below the roofline features faux brackets and small diamond-shaped modillions; this cornice was added after 1977 when the roof was reconstructed. The front elevation faces south and is symmetrical in plan with a 2-story, rectangular tower projecting from the center of the facade and rising above the main roofline. The tower is capped by an asphalt-shingled hipped roof with wide overhanging eaves and diminutive wood braces underneath the eaves. Centered at the base of the tower is an insensitive pair of glass and wood double doors (added after 1977 as a replacement for the original multi-pane doors and wide, 6-pane transom). Above this is an incised stone panel set between two vertical bands of soldier bricks with contrasting stones at each end. A single-pane window is located at the top of the tower just below its roofline. The facade of the main building mass contains two singly-placed single-pane casement windows on each side of the center tower. Each window contains a single-pane transom. All windows are insensitive post-1977 replacements (original windows in the main building mass were 4-over-4 double-hung with 3-pane transoms and the tower window opening originally contained a pair of smaller 4-over-4 double-hung windows). Vertical bands of soldier bricks with contrasting stones at each end flank the windows on each side. Wooden trellising has been added along the building’s raised foundation obscuring any basement windows. |
