NOTES
Additional Information:The house was built by Josiah Arnold, a real estate and loan agent. Sale, a long-term resident of the house, was a lawyer who served as city attorney and county judge; he also was vice-president of the Bower City Bank.

"This lively Queen Anne style house was built by Arnold, a real estate and loan agent. A later long-term resident was John W. Sale, a Rock County judge and vice-president of the Bower City Bank. The gable-roofed design is organized around a prominent oriel which terminates in a finial-capped tower. Bull's eye windows light the gable ends. Three shingle patterns are used in the front gable: square, octagon, and diamond-cut." The Courthouse Hill Historic District: A Guide, Janesville Historic Commission, 1997.
