Additional Information: | See district site file. Historical Background The Lundbergs were interersted in establishing a Baptist church in the village and donated the land adjacent to their home for its site. Mr. George Clark donated an architects services to draw the plans. Mrs. Lundberg previously taught Sunday School in the town hall which was then located next to the Thorp Hotel. In 1915, the church became the First Baptist Church of Fish Creek. In 1917, builder Sam Erickson finished the building which cost $3,415. In 1933 Reverend Colby was established as the first full time minister. The church became a fully independent interdenominational organization in 1978. The ownership history of this property (south half of Lot 4 of block 11 of Asa Thorp's Plat) is unusual. It was part of a large parcel of land belonging to Levi and Jane Thorp which was transferred to Asa Thorp in 1889. In 1896 one lot of the parcel was sold to Alice LUndberg. While the Lundbergs provided the land for the church in 1917, it does not appear to have officially become church property until 1961. Architectural Description The Community Church is a side gable building with a projecting gable roofed entrance landing. The asphalt-clad roof is steeply pitched, and projects over the wood shingle clad walls. Stained glass tudor-arch windows grace the street-facing side elevation. Other windows are single pane casements spaced evenly on the long walls. The church rests on a cement-clad foundation. A rear basement level addition was constructed later. |
