Additional Information: | The F in the photo codes is for Fox Canal Survey. This structure contributes to the significance of the Broadway-Huron Street Historic District under criterion C as a typical example of a utilitarian brick, Victorian warehouse or small industrial structure that has served with most of its original features intact. This building was built around 1893 according to fire insurance maps and the title for the property. In 1895, Chas. M. Boettge purchased the property and constructed a bake house in back of the existing building. It was called the Union Bakery and Otto Ludwig, of Chicago, was in charge of daily operations. The bakery produced a variety of breads, biscuits and cakes, and carried an extensive stock of toys, confectionery, fruit, cigars, and tobaccos. Mr. Boettge was born in Oshkosh in 1861 and he was married to Miss Katherine Zeddies in 1887. He was a member of the fire department for seven years and served as chief in 1893-94. |
