Additional Information: | The F in the photo codes is for Fox Canal Survey. Stone veneer added in 1957. This was originally built as the Porter B. Yates Machine Shop in the ca. 1870s. Indeed the 1875 map of the City of Berlin jotes that the building was extant. By 1891, Sanborn maps indicate that the structure was utilized as the J. Murphy Pail factory; the name changed slightly in 1895 to the J.T. Murphy Butter Tub Factory. Within five years, Murphy had moved his butter tub and cheese box factory to the intersection of Union and Pearl streets. The subject structure was then used as a manufacturing facility for the Truesdell Fur Coat Co., until sometime between 1911 and 1926. By the latter date, the facility was owned by the Fox River Tanning Company. In 2002, the building was owned by Safeguard America, which produces heavy duty gloves and protective wear, such as aprons. |
