NOTES
Additional Information:This structure contributes to the significance of the Nathan Strong Park Historic District as an excellent and rare example of an exuberant Italianate cottage with a belvedere. A rare gem of the Italianate bracketed style, this remarkably architectural little villa is one of Berlin's finest buildings in spite of the unfortunate alterations to the front porch, some ill conceived changes to some of the windows and a poorly executed garage addition.

Arthur Johnson purchased this property in 1852 and constructed his home in 1872. It remained with the Johnson family for over 100 years, until 1953. Before Mr. Johnson built this house he lived in a nearby home which he purchased from W.B. Sherwood in 1864.

Mr. Johnson came to Berlin from Ireland in 1852, with several of his countrymen. They were the founders of the Masonic Lodge in Berlin. Mr. Johnson ran a stationary and news depo until his death in 1887. At this time his son, William H. Johnson, inherited his father's house and business. WIlliams expanded the business to include sewing machines and musical instruments. He later served as postmaster for a period of ten years.
