Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. CARVED STONE PEDIMENT. STONE LINTELS. Resurveyed October 2012; new windows. This 1 ½ story Side Gabled house with Greek Revival detailing was constructed in 1857. It is rectangular in plan with fieldstone walls and an asphalt-shingled bent gable roof (the roof slope over the rear/south elevation is lower than the roof slope over the main building mass; differences in the stonework suggest that this southern mass is a later construction). The front elevation faces north and is symmetrical in plan with a central door and two 1-over-1 windows on each side. The door has a stone crown suggestive of a classical pediment. The east and west elevations contain 1-over-1 windows as well as small octagonal windows in the southern half of the elevation. Franz Watzke emigrated from his native Prussia with his Nebrieke (also recorded as Ulrikka) and their children, settling in the Town of Berry in 1852. Watzke subsequently constructed the side-gabled, limestone house at 8125 STH 19 in 1857. The family remained on the farmstead only until 1867, at which time the property was sold and the Watzkes relocated to Section 10 in the Town of Springfield. Outbuildings were constructed on the property by the Johann Annen family who purchased the property shortly after the Watzkes relocated. Also a native of Prussia, Johann Annen purchased the Watzke farmstead--presumably in 1867--shortly after marrying his first wife, Margaret Lauerman. Margaret passed away in 1877, and Johann subsequently remarried--to Gertrude Grell in the late 1870s. The Annen family retained ownership of the farmstead for almost 90 years. Mathias (Matthew) Annen, the youngest of Johann and Gertrude's sons, inherited the family farmstead around 1915 and remained there into the late 1940s. The farm was subsequently purchased by Albert and Mahala Kruchten. Prior to purchasing the farmstead at 8125 STH 19, Albert Krutchen is recorded in the 1940 US Federal Census as being a masonry laborer, which is of particular interest as the shed roofed rear addition was added to the house during his ownership around 1960. The farm is no longer owned by the Krutchen family. Other buildings on site include #227817 #227819 |
