Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. This structure contributes to the significance of the Broadway-Huron Street Historic District under criterion C as a reasonably intact example of Victorian era brick blacksmith shop. This is a rare surviving brick example of a type of utilitarian structure once common in 19th century communities, that has become quite rare. Fire insurance maps indicate that this building was constructed around 1895 and that it served as a blacksmith shop. It was originally owned by Nels Jensen and it changed ownership several times before being purchased by George Huser in 1946. Mr. Huser became a farm machinery dealer in 1949, but he maintained the blacksmith shop until 1955, when he moved his business to the former location of Sam Verhayen's Ford Dealership. |
