Additional Information: | This property is locally significant under criterion C as a well-preserved example of a transitional Italianate-Victorian Gothic framehouse with superb exterior detailing. This handsome cruciform house illustrates the subtle merging of Italianate and Victorian Gothic features that occurred in the late 1870s. It slow gabled roof, bracketed porches with chambered posts and shaped window surrounds suggest the waning Italianate style, while the waxing Victorian Gothic is evident in the scalloped wood trim applied to the porches and the window surrounds and in the bargeboards at the eaves. The house is notable for its well executed wood trim and its basic shaped proportions reminiscent of the houses promoted by A.J. Downing in his publications. |
