Additional Information: | This Italianate styled retail building features a rectangular shaped plan confiugration and a brick exterior. The trim materials include brick, stone metal and wood. Dentil trim as well as decorative brickwork adorns the area just beneath the cornice line. The second story has elongated round arched windows with raised brick lintels. The structure is in fair condition and is now used as space for an apartment and retail. Historical Background: This building was constructed around 1870 and according to fire insurance maps, it was a saloon from 1884 to around 1893, when it became a jewelry store. The store was owned by Edward G. Longcroft, who came to Berlin from Illinois in 1865. He entered the jewelry trade in 1869 and initially worked for D. J. Turner for about a year. Then he went into the jewelry store of S. G. Rosencrans, where he remained until 1876, when he started his own business. |
