Additional Information: | This large 2 1/2 story late Queen Anne/Colonial Revival style house is asymetrical in plan and elevation yet discreetly decorated with classically derived detailing-including a Palladian gable window, modillions, mouldings, swags and other embellishments. The wrap around porch is accented with a gable at the entry and paired and tripled, unfluted columns support an eave/entablature accented with a dentil moulding. The porch begins at the entry and wraps around a corner bay/tower. The porch railing is supported by turned balusters. The foundation and the support for the porch columns are of local grey limestone set as rockfaced ashlar. This transitional styled building is an excellent example of this period in domestic architecture when the tradition was Queen Anne and the "Modern" was the Colonial Revival. This building is remarkably intact with nearly all original detailing still in place. This is one of the best examples of this transitional style within the city. Havier Gattie owned the entire Lot 1 in 1886. Gattie a Frenchman, millwright of the Scofield Co., had a residence on the property as evidenced by the value of $1000 placed onthe lot by the tax assessor. In 1897 Gattie sold a portion of Lot 1 off ton H.C. Poehler. The following year Gattie sold the rest of his property to Charles Greisen City Assessor lowered the value of the Greisen property to $800. In 1900, the Board of Review made note of improvements occuring on the Greisen property, doubling its value to $1800. In 1901 continued improvements occured in 1902, the value of Greison's improvements was assessed at $3500 indicating the completion of the construction began in 1900. This was the large house which now occupies the site. Gattie either took his residence to another lot, or Greisen removed it. |
