Additional Information: | This two-story, clapboard sided composition roofed house is a virtually unaltered example of the "Homestead" style of vernacular residential building tee shaped in plan. The gables are decorated with fancy butt shingles in hexagonal, half cove, and fishscale patterns, and the window surrounds are accented with Eastlake type incising. Art glass panels decorate the transom of the "front" window while the porch is supported by turned wood posts with a spindlework screen just below the porch eaves. A bay window accents the South facade. Resting on a squared limestone foundation, this simple house is an excellent andrelatively unaltered example of a building type once common in the city. The property above described had been under confused or conflicting title until 1892 when Fred Mullina cquired tracts in C,D,E,J in Lot 2 Subd. 6. Mullin's tax assessment that year amounted to $225 for all 4 tracts, an indication of a vacant property. Mullin sold the tracts to John Gabert in 1894 and the value jumped to $700. In 1897 Gaberts lots were valued at $1200 an indication that some improvement and building had taken place. Bay 1901, tax assessor records note that a $900 house is lcoated on the property. Gabert retained possession until after 1931, with significant improvements occuring in 1912, 1916, and 1923. |
