Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Vaguely Neo-Renaissance in style, this three story school building is typical of many throughout the country built at this time. A first story of rusticated, grey limestone supports two upper stores of red brick. A broad, moulded cornice wraps the building just below a plain brick parapet. The facade is symmetrical with two slightly projecting end bays framing an implied collosal colonade made up of brick pilasters which separate bays of double windows. Lintels, sills, plaster bases, and spandrel lozenges are of sawn limestone and ornately moulded. A similarly scaled addition to the East is similarly detailed. Other additions are utilitarian blocks made up of rusticated local limestone set as coursed ashlar. While this building has had a long association with the people of Sturgeon Bay, it is of architectural interest primarily as a local example of a common public building type that has retained its architectural character over time. |
