Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. This two-story commercial vernacular retail structure was built in 1896. (See Bib. Ref. B). It features a rectangular shaped plan configuration, a brick exterior, and a flat roof. The elaborate metal cornice is bracketed and dentil-trimmed. The name of the block is indicated on a small pediment above the cornice. Corbelling appears below the cornice, and brick pilasters run vertically on the facade. The round arch openings on the second floor are now partially enclosed. The intact lower storefront includes in its design cast iron columns. The structure is in excellent condition. Architectural/Engineering Significance: The W. D. Pascoe Block, constructed in the last decade of the nineteenth century, is an important local illustration of commercial vernacular architecture. Distinguished by an elaborate metal cornice, round arch openings, and an intact lower storefront area, the brick structure retains (for the most part) its original appearance and contributes to the architectural significance of the Iowa Street Historic District. Historical Background: The Pascoe Block housed a saloon soon after (or at least the time of) its construction and until at least 1905. (See Bib. Ref. B, C). a drugstore owned by William F. Prideaux was the next occupant of the distinctive commercial structure. (See Bib. Ref. C, D). |
