NOTES
Additional Information:Designed in the Italianate style, this two-story retail building was constructed in 1898. (See Bib. Ref. A). It features a rectangular shaped plan configuration, a stone foundation, a red brick exterior, and a flat roof. Corbel tables distinguish the roofline. Elaborate brickwork found beneath the tables adorns not only the facade, but also the side elevations. The elongated, second-story windows are characterized by segmental arch openings, brick hoods and stone sills. Appearing at the corner of the facade is a narrow turret, complete with a conical shaped roof and a finial. Rough brick was used to accentuate the turret and the segmental arches, while new brick is found on the first story. The building is in excellent condition. Architectural/Engineering Significance: Erected in 1898, the Owens building is a significant example of commercial vernacular architecture and a pivotal element of the Iowa Street Historic District. The two-story brick structure, featuring segmental arch openings, brickwork patterns, and a corner turret, is distinctive and a noteworthy addition to the district's architectural inventory. Historical Background: A grocery store owned by John and Charles Owens was the original occupant of this corner commercial block. (See Bib. Ref. C, D).
