NOTES
Additional Information:This building may have been substantially and neatly remodeled early in the 20th century from an ell plan to the squarish plan of today by filling in the open part of the ell. This could explain the minimal fenestration of the primary facade, the asymetry of the gables section and the later character of the porcfh. The reuse of removed elements-such as window frames and cornice prackets-or their careful matching has produced a unified if somewhat eccentric primary facade. The decorative detail includes a modified cornice supported by paired brackets decorated with shallow modillions and a racetract molding in the frieze. This detail, plus the pairs of arched windows beneath the gables and the arched openings on the entry door suggest the late Italianate style while the massing of the building, and some window detail, and the entry porch suggest the classical revival. This massive, two story lbuilding is handsomely designed and well maintained. It is an excellent example of a common architectural style that is uncommin in Sturgeon Bay--especially in its classically derived detailing. E.S. Minor was an important local figure in Door County. Born in New York, Minor came to Wisconsin in 1845. He arrived in Door County in 1858. Between 1861-1865 Minor served in the Union Army and when the Civil War ended he settled in Fish Creek after marrying a daughter of O.P. Graham-Sturgeon Bay's first resident and one of the community's leading businessmen. Minor settled in Sturgeon Bay in 1882 and established a hardware store which was unfortunately burned. He succeeded in the tugboat business, when the Sturgeon Bay-Lake Michigan Canal was completed. Minor was elected to Congress on several occazsions and established a stone quarry in later years.
