Additional Information: | This cream brick, 1 1/2 story residence is accented by red brickwork quoins outlining the primary facade. This is a common localism, particularly in Southern Door County, but this is the only example evident within the city. The stilted, also in brickwork, and the detailing of the bay window on the west facade suggest an Italianate flavor but the dominant style can only be called vernacular. A front porch has been removed which could have been a major indicator of style. Most windows have been reduced to accept standard size aluminum windows and a shed dormer, a rear addition, a small front porch, and a rear access stairway have been added. The building is on a large, wooded lot and is set back quite far from the street. Despite the modifications, this simple brick house is of some architectural significance as an example of a local, vernacular building style. Its historical association with Joseph Harris is of more significance. This is, however, said to be the first brick house in Door County. Joseph Harris, Sr. was one of Sturgeon Bay's most important residents. He was intimately connected with the design and development of the Sturgeon Bay-Lake Michigan Canal (See Historical Overview Section of the Intensive Survey Report). Harris founded the Door County Advocate in 1862, was the first Clerk of Door County, first Register of Deeds, first County Treasurer, and in 1864, became first State Senator from Door County. |
