Additional Information: | This simply detailed church has exterior walls of local grey limestone set as randomly coursed ashlar. The building stones are rockfaced, the usual treatment of this hard and difficult to trim material. Both pointed and flat arched windows are found. The pointed have thin muntins in the form of tracery while the flat have implied "medieval" detailing at the upper lights. Rectangular in plan, with intersecting gables, the building has a corner entry with pointed arch openings and stonework balustrade at the landing. A bell tower to the back of this is capped with a battlement, also of grey limestone. Church building first erected in 1885 through donations supplied by Ole Johnson and Nels Torstenson, local businessmen. Miss Mary Adellwas a noted Quaker Evangelist helped organize the drive to interest Sturgeon Bay residents in the Quaker movement. The stonework was added in 1902, at the behest of the Sturgeon Bay Stone Quarry which donated the raw materials. The famous hymn "The Old Rugged Cross" was first presented at The Friends Church by Reverend George Bernard in 1913. |
