Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Rectalinear in plan, this single-story with basement building is executed in local grey limestone, set as coursed ashlar with a rockface finish, and trimmed with softer grey limestone that has been carved. A central entrywing has a large, semicircular arched opening for the vestibule leading to the entry doors. Carved stone trim forms a modillioned cornice, just below the parapet, and other carved stone features are what appear to be shallow consoles at the corner pilaster capitals which support an implied entablature. This handsomely designed building is an excellent example of both a building type and an application of a local building material. For these reasons, it is of architectural significance. In 1910, the philanthropic Carnegie Foundation granted the Sturgeon Bay Library Association $12,500 for the construction of a library. It was built in 1913 to the design of local architect Fred D. Crandall and served the Sturgeon Bay community until 1974 when the present library was built. When the 1913 library opened, 1300 volumes were added to the book collection. The Sturgeon Bay Public Library moved out of the building on 354 Michigan Street in 1975-1976 and as of 1998, the building's new occupants are Certified Public Accountants. (E). |
