Italianate features include overhanging eaves with brackets, decorative windows surrounds, and porch and door design. Built in about 1858 for Morris Clark Smith, one of Janesville's earliest and most successful merchants as a partner of J. M. Boswick. In 1850 he was elected chairman of the Town Board of Supervisors, and was reelected in 1851 and 1852. Smith resided here until 1889.
