Additional Information: | Large two story stone house with Queen Anne and Neo-classic features. Queen Anne features include a round tower capped with a conical roof, a multi-planed roof, and tall chimneys. The design of the portico is Neo-classic. Built in 1901 for Archie Reid according to the design of Chicago architect Henry Lord Gay who designed a number of large houses on Geneva Lake. Reid, a native of Scotland, was a prominent merchant and horse importer. "Reid was a native of Scotland, a well-to-do merchant, and importer of horses. His residence shows the influence of the Richardsonian Romanesque Style in its treatment of the rock-faced, random-coursed ashlar and prominent corner turret. Panels on the turret are stamped with urn motifs, and continuous coil and dentil courses terminate the composition. The portico is carried by six slender Ionic columns on stone bases. Gay, a Chicago architect who began his practice in 1867, was noted for the design of many of the large estate houses at Geneva Lake."
